‘The Secret Garden’ at CityStage

SPRINGFIELD – The Drama Studio will present the children’s classic The Secret Garden at CityStage in downtown Springfield March 4-6 in the Blake Theatre for four performances.
The production is sponsored by MassMutual and provides a rare opportunity for area families to attend a play for young audiences. Co-Sponsor of the production is the Springfield Cultural Council.
Dramatized by Drama Studio founder Steve Hays and directed by Artistic Director Dan Morbyrne, The Secret Garden is based on the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Written just over 100 years ago, this powerful story will resonate with children of today, dealing with themes of loneliness, abandonment, and the powers of nature and friendship to heal the spirit. A large cast of advanced Drama Studio students will inspire family audiences in a production that will fill the Blake Theatre stage with beautiful sets, music, lights and costumes. Two additional performances of the production will be offered free to Springfield elementary school students.
“Ten year old Mary Lennox is a fascinating protagonist,” says Director Morbyrne. ” She is arrogant, ignorant, and rude, yet so alone and vulnerable that we can’t help but sympathize with her struggle. Watching her discover her capacity for empathy and friendship is hugely rewarding. In a world where so much of our communication has become automated, The Secret Garden reminds us of the importance of real human connection, and the dangers we face without it.”
Now in its 29th year, the Drama Studio offers a conservatory-style acting training program for over 250 students in the Greater Springfield area. Its program is unique in New England and many graduates have advanced into careers in theatre, film and television. Currently, alum Kim Allen is featured as Jackie Kennedy in the soon-to-be released film LBJ directed by Rob Reiner, staring Woody Harrelson. Previous children’s productions at CityStage are The Snow Queen, Sara Crewe, Pinocchio, and Alice in Wonderland.
Performances of The Secret Garden are Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 PM. Matinees are Saturday, March 5 at 4 PM and Sunday, March 6 at 3 PM. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students. CityStage is located at 1 Columbus Center in downtown Springfield. Free parking is available for theatregoers in the Columbus Center garage with direct elevator access to the CityStage lobby.
