LONGMEADOW – Outgoing Longmeadow Police Chief John Stankiewicz won’t be going too far in his retirement years.

Bay Path University announced in a press release on Jan. 16 that the college had hired Stankiewicz as its director of public safety. In that role, he will oversee the university’s staff of 13 full-time and part-time officers at its main campus in Longmeadow as well as satellite locations in East Longmeadow, Springfield, Sturbridge and Concord.

“We are thrilled Chief Stankiewicz will be joining the Bay Path community as director of public safety and look forward to his arrival on campus,” said Michael Giampietro, vice president for finance and administrative services. “His extensive experience in the field of public safety, his connection to and understanding of Bay Path through his work in town, and his previous experience as an adjunct faculty member in our criminal justice program, make him the ideal candidate for this role.”

Stankiewicz submitted to the town his letter of intent to retire on Jan. 6 and Town Manager Lyn Simmons informed the board of his decision at their meeting later that evening. Bay Path announced Stankiewicz’s retirement was effective Feb. 29 and his start date with the university would be March 2. When queried by the Longmeadow News, Simmons said Stankiewicz’s retirement date had not yet been determined.

“It’s still fluid at this point,” she said. “The retirement does have to be within 90 days of when he informed the town.”

Stankiewicz said he and Simmons are still “in discussion about the transition process, adding, “Although, if we can come to terms, I would prefer my last day to be on Feb. 29.

Simmons added the process for finding Stankiewicz’s replacement is still in its beginning stages and she plans to present the search process by the end of next week.

“I am still working on the process with Human Resources and our labor counsel,” she said. “Because there is the possibility of internal candidates, I want to be sure we are following all of the agreements that are in place.”

Stankiewicz has been a member of the Longmeadow Police Department for 37 years, including holding the rank of captain from 2008 to 2015.

He was a finalist for police chief positions in Boxford and Truro in 2011, but remained in Longmeadow, becoming the chief of police in 2015. The Select Board composed of Richard Foster, Marie Angelides, Thomas Lacchiusa, Alex Grant and Mark Gold unanimously voted in favor of elevating him to succeed Chief Robert Siano at the recommendation of former Town Manager Stephen Crane.
