Longmeadow Police Logs, July 1-7, 2019

(Editor’s Note: Under normal circumstances, information about fallen tree limbs and simple traffic hazards would not be included in this log. However, given the weather event of July 6, the Longmeadow News felt it was important to properly illustrate the nature and volume of calls to which the Police Department responded.)

Monday, July 1

10:39 a.m.: Police assisted the Longmeadow Fire Department in entering a home on Pinewood Drive due to a natural gas leak. The Fire Department gained access and Columbia Gas shut off the gas.

1:59 p.m.: A caller reported a fire alarm at a house on Magnolia Circle kept going off.

5:56 p.m.: Multiple callers reported a female on Drury Lane screaming. An officer reported the resident was back in the house and all was in order.

9:58 p.m.: Police responded to a crash involving a motor vehicle and a deer.

Tuesday, July 2

8:02 a.m.: A motor vehicle crash was reported on Longmeadow Street. A citation was issued for following too close.

9:51 p.m.: A motor vehicle crash occurred on Shaker Road.

11:33 p.m.: Longmeadow’s K-9 unit assisted another agency with a track.

Wednesday, July 3

3:22 p.m.: A motor vehicle crash occurred near Dover Road and Converse Street.

9:25 p.m.: Police conducted a motor vehicle stop near Bliss Road and Blueberry Hill Road and arrested and charged Andrew J. Scannell, 26, of 471 Dewey St., West Springfield with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license for operating under the influence.

9:35 p.m.: A motor vehicle crash occurred near Longmeadow Street and York Drive. The vehicle rolled over and Massachusetts State Police were on the scene, having pursued the vehicle prior to the accident. State police arrested and charged James Miller, 19, of Somers, CT, with speeding, failure to stop, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a passing violation, a marked lanes violation, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Thursday, July 4

1:46 a.m.: A caller reported a possible argument in a vehicle parked outside a home on Green Hill Road. Police found the operator was waiting for his girlfriend and agreed to move along.

Friday, July 5

4:31 p.m.: A motor vehicle crash occurred near Farmington Avenue and Laurel Street. A caller reported a vehicle hit a pole and a female was trapped inside a vehicle.

Saturday, July 5

12:07 a.m.: A caller reported two teens, one wearing white shorts and a dark shirt, throwing beer bottles. The teens were last seen walking on Woolworth Street toward Bliss Street. Police were unable to locate them.

5:07 p.m.: A caller reported a tree fell on his car while he was driving. He sustained no injuries.

5:08 p.m.: A caller reported lightning stuck close to the house and smoke was in the basement.

5:17 p.m.: Police received a report of a branch on a wire near Laurel Street and Shaker Road.

5:17 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree down on Tennyson Drive.

5:18 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree limb down on Lynnwood Drive.

5:24 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree on a roof and a fire across the street on Longfellow Drive. The Longmeadow Fire Department responded to the scene.

5:31 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree limb in the road near Hawthorn Street and Hopkins Place. The Department of Public Works was notified.

5:38 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree on a power line on Shaker Road. Eversource was notified.

5:44 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree across the road on Longmeadow Street. The Department of Public Works was notified.

6:20 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree down on Bark Haul Road Bridge.

6:23 p.m.: A caller reported his father’s vehicle was stuck in the water near Hazardville Road and Tedford Drive and he along with two children were attempting to push the vehicle out of the road. The vehicle was gone upon an officer’s arrival.

6:28 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree on a vehicle on Greenacre Avenue.

6:57 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree on a house on Bellclaire Avenue and it was unknown if the house was occupied. The Longmeadow Fire Department checked the house and found the occupants were not inside.

7:11 p.m.: Police received a report of a downed tree limb on Ardsley Road. The limb was moved by an officer.

7:37 p.m.: A caller reported a tree fell on the back side of his house on Green Meadow Drive.

7:53 p.m.: A motor vehicle crash occurred near Longmeadow Street and Maple Road. A neck injury was reported, but EMS transportation was refused. A citation was issued for following too close.

7:55 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree on wires on Elmwood Ave. The Fire Department laid out barricades.

8:21 p.m.: Police received a report of a wire hanging on West Road.

8:24 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree in the road on Converse Street.

8:29 p.m.: Police received a report that a tree fell on a vehicle in a parking lot on Williams Street.

9:11 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree down near Parkside Street and Williams Street. Northern Tree Service was notified.

9:25 p.m.: Police received a BOLO from Springfield for a silver SUV operated by a large male, 6 feet, 200 pounds, wearing a T-shirt and shorts who attempted to lure a female into the vehicle. The SUV was seen leaving Brentwood Street onto Tiffany Street.

9:36 p.m.: Police received a report of a tree blocking one lane of Dartmouth Road near Laurel Street.

10:40 p.m.: Police assisted the Fire Department with a carbon monoxide detector activation on Crescent Road, which turned out to be a malfunction.

Sunday, July 7

8:32 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree partially across the sidewalk on Longmeadow Street. An officer reported it was a town tree and blocked the area.

8:53 a.m.: An officer found large branches in the road on Hopkins Place.

8:55 a.m. Police received a report of a tree partially blocking the road. An officer reports the area is passable and there is no hazard.

8:56 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree down on Morningside Drive. An officer reported a large branch brought down cable wire.

8:57 a.m.: Police received a report of a branch on a sidewalk on Hopkins Place.

9:03 a.m.: An officer reported a tree branch blocking part of the road and sidewalk on Wehnoah Place.

9:16 a.m.: An officer reported a wire across yards on Laurel Street and moved it to the tree belt.

9:21 a.m.: An officer reported a tree blocking the sidewalk near Dartmouth Road and Laurel Street.

9:24 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree blocking half the road near Cherry Land and Pinewood Drive.

9:26 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree branch blocking the sidewalk and another branch hanging across the sidewalk.

9:29 a.m.: Police received a report of a large tree limb across the sidewalk on Longview Drive.

9:37 a.m.: An officer reported a large branch across the road on Cherry Lane and moved it to the side.

9:40 a.m.: An officer reported a tree across the sidewalk on Crescent Road.

9:40 a.m.: An officer reports a town tree down across a driveway on Crescent Road.

9:51 a.m.: A caller reported a manhole cover blew off with smoke coming out of it. An underground transformer issue was the cause and the Fire Department contacted Eversource.

9:57 a.m.: Police received a report of a branch partially blocking a lane on Westmoreland Avenue.

9:59 a.m.: Police received a report that traffic lights were out near Lognmeadow Street and Maple Road. Stop signs were deployed.

10:21 a.m.: An officer reported a tree fell and there are wires between a tree and a bucket loader. Eversource was notified.

10:43 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree branch blocking the sidewalk on Benedict Terrace.

10:56 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree branch on the sidewalk near a parking lot on Williams Street.

11:01 a.m.: Police received a report of a tree branch on a cable wire on Hopkins Place. A responding officer reported the branch was close to breaking and the DPW blocked off the area.

1:42 p.m.: Police received a report that a limb from a town tree came down in a yard on Longfellow Drive and a hornet’s nest was on the branch.

2:06 p.m.: Police received a report of a wire that fell in a driveway on Longfellow Drive. An officer fount it to be a cable wire and moved it.

2:11 p.m.: A caller reported their vehicle was keyed on Shaker Road.

6:45  p.m. Police received a report of a hanging branch on wires on Bliss Road. Officers were able to remove the branch to eliminate the hazard. Comcast was notified and refused to remove the branch from the cable.
