Did you know that the iconic Hollywood sign was an advertisement for a housing development? Of that one of the earliest films in existence dates from 1894? In 1900 Hollywood was a small, conservative town. Its scenery and abundant sunlight drew filmmakers, as did the opportunity to evade the patent enforcements of Thomas Edison. Learn how Hollywood evolved from a barren landscape to a prosperous, conservative community, then to a glittering movie mecca full of glamorous film starts and eye-popping scandal. Historian and story teller Ann Barrett will illustrate her talk with film clips from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Paid for by the Friends Group (FOLOCA), this presentation is free and open to the public. Join us.

Bond, James Bond, that is – is back in what is undoubtedly one of the best films of the franchise. Directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes, Skyfall is grand, sophisticated and abnormally personal. Judi Dench brings her always elegant, tough-as-nails, smart and wise M. Plenty of chase scenes, shooting, twists and turns for Bond fans. No charge for the movie. Even the popcorn is free.
